Harriet E. Benfer, 80, of Millheim, passed from this life on Saturday, January 26th at her home.  Born November 21, 1938 in Milroy, Harriet was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Verdola S. “Long” Paige.  She was a 1956 graduate of the former Armagh Brown High School in Reedsville.  On March 17, 1957, Harriet married the love of her life, Harold M. Benfer, who preceded her in death on May 31, 2016.

Harriet began her employment at the former Farmers National Bank in Millheim as a proof operator.  She continued with the bank in various jobs and through different bank mergers, ending as a secretary to the Human Resource Manager at the former Omega Financial Corporation.  She retired with 25 plus years of service.  She was a member of the former St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Millheim and the Black Panther Riding Club.  Harriet was involved in the “Christmas in Millheim” events, and was a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 88 in Millheim.  She and Harold enjoyed traveling together, with the Outer Banks being an every year destination.  Harriet was an antique collector, loved to bake, cook, and attend Grange Fair, where she first met Harold.  She was very gifted in fine handcrafts.  Most of all, Harriet loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Harriet is survived by two daughters, Susan M. Hull (Jeff) of Millheim and Shari Ann Dillon (Mike) of Spring Mills; one son, Mark Benfer (Ann) of Millheim; eight grandchildren, Amanda (Jon), Josh (Megan), Ethan (Amelia), Lucas, Elliot, Ben, Sara and Liam and four great grandchildren, Max, Emma, Leo, and Drake.  In addition to her husband, Harriet was preceded in death by siblings, Janice Aumiller, Joyce Dunmire, Jean Paige and Merritt Paige.  The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice, and Houck Home Care for the loving and excellent care given to Harriet during her short illness.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, January 29th from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home in Millheim, followed by the Memorial Service at 7:30pm with Chaplain Bill Esborn officiating.  Harriet will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery at a later date.  Contributions in memory of Harriet may be given to Millheim Fire Co, Po Box 656, Millheim PA 16854.
