James Askey Obituary

James David Askey of Centre Hall, PA, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed from this life on Friday, May 18, 2018 at Mount Nittany Medical Center.  Born December 27, 1939 in Philipsburg, Jim was a son of the late James Mitchel and Elsie Gertrude Askey.  He was a graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School and attended Penn State University.  On February 25, 1961, he married the love of his life, Wanita J. Grove, who survives at their home.

Jim was employed in retail sales, working at W.T. Grants, Gee Bee’s, Walmart and various other retail stores.  He was a member of the former St. John’s U.C.C in Farmer’s Mills, now St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Jim enjoyed spending time in his woodworking shop, gardening, reading and camping.  He loved to listen to country music-- especially the old time country music and bluegrass gospel.  His favorite artists were Hank Williams, Sr. and John Prine.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by two daughters, Colleen A. Owens (David) of Nottingham, PA; Laura J. Fried (Andrew) of Alexandria, VA; one son, James David Askey II (Valerie) of Tafton, PA; and five grandchildren, Katrina C. McNeely (Ryan), Rebecca W. A. Askey, Emily J. Owens, Harrison James Askey and Kayla A. Askey.  Also surviving is one sister, Betty J. Jodon (Don); three brothers, Thomas Askey (Kim), Boyd Askey and Floyd Askey (Vanessa) along with his beloved canine companion Xander.  Jim was preceded in death by one sister, Donna M. Fisher.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Xander and his family.
