Franklin B. Auman died peacefully in his home in Ashburn, Virginia on August 12, 2024. He was born in Coburn, PA on March 30, 1936, son of the late Franklin B. Auman, Sr. and Faye A. Harter Auman Vonada. On March 25, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary V. Long in Spring Mills, PA. They had three children: Michael, who preceded him in death in January 2009; his wife, Kim (Clearfield, PA) and three sons Timothy (Harrisburg, PA) and his wife Kelly and their sons Christian and Cameron; Curtis (Bel Air, MD) and his wife, Yetti and their daughter, Emma and son, Noah (d. 2023); and Mark (Houtzdale, PA) and his partner, Raelle; son Rickey (Herndon, VA) and his wife Peggy and their sons, Zachary (Denver, CO) and his fiancée, Amanda, and Luke (Herndon, VA) and Dirk (Hagerstown, MD); and his wife, Katie; daughter Pamela (Ashburn, VA) and her partner, Mark and her daughters, Jessica Funk (Ashburn, VA) and her husband, Michael and their sons Brayden, Ryland and Graeson; Alysia Covello (Philadelphia, PA) and her husband, Tor and their son Otto. He was preceded in death by half-sisters, Helen and Dorothy, and half-brothers, Ed and Gene and sister, Mae Dillman.
He graduated from Penns Valley High School (GTVS) in 1954 and attended classes at the University of Virginia and the Pennsylvania State University. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1961. He was a cryptographer and during his two-year assignment in Germany, he played soccer for the US Seventh Army. The 7th Army soccer team toured Germany and played in Goodwill games against German civilian and military teams.
After leaving the military, he was employed by Raytheon (formerly HRB-Singer) in State College and Virginia from Jan 1961 until retirement in May of 1998. He started as an Engineering Aide and served in positions of increasing responsibilities, retiring as the Director of Security and Facilities. Based on his years of experience, he was granted an EBS in Management in 1988.
Frank was a Life Member of the American Society of International Security and was designated by the Society as a Certified Protection Professional in 1977. In 1988, he was named in Who’s Who in Security (1989-90 edition). Upon retirement he was granted a Lifetime membership by the Society with Lifetime CPP designation. He was also a member of American Society for Industrial Security, the National Security Industrial Association, and Aerospace industries Associations of America. He served his community as Township Auditor (1966-67) and Supervisor (1968), Ferguson Township. He was also elected Vice President, Center County Elected Officials (1968). Upon moving to Gregg Township in Spring Mills, PA. he served on several Penns Valley Area School committees involved with Safety/Security issues. He was a member of the Millheim Fireman’s Club and lifetime member of Millheim American Legion, Post 0444.
He loved the outdoors and “The Farm,” fishing, hunting, hiking, photography, and Penn State sports, especially wrestling. Most of all he loved family gatherings and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024, 11am at Family Life of Penns Valley, 108 Ridge Road, Centre Hall, PA. He will be interred at Farmers Mills Cemetery, Spring Mills, PA.
