Surrounded by his loving family, James A. Artley, of Rebersburg went home to be with the Lord May 6, 2024, at his home. Born June 12, 1944, in Bloomsburg, Jim was a son of the late Emmanuel J. and Jean F. “Miller” Artley. He was a 1962 graduate of Catawissa High School. Jim enlisted in the U.S Army after high school. On August 28, 1965, he married Jan L. Carey during a double wedding ceremony with Joan and John. Jan survives at their home.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Boyles (Scott) of Rebersburg; one son, Jeff Artley (Sara) of Richland, OR; one sister, Peggy Artley of Catawissa and five grandchildren, Bendigo Artley, Katie Haines, Jonis Haines, Emily Heltman (Ramie) and Ethan Heltman. Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Deanna Bungee and his daughter, Julie Haines.
Jim was employed as a carpenter but most recently he was known as the “Over the Hill handyman”. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing quoits, morning coffee club at Longs Auto Parts and traveling to Canada on fishing trips. Some of Jim’s most favorite things were spending time at hunting camp where he loved being in the woods, being with his grandchildren when possible and yellow Labrador’s. His favorite canine friend was named Jake.
Jim was a man of musical talent. While in the military, he played the clarinet and saxophone in the Seventh Army Symphony, the only symphonic orchestral ensemble ever created under the supervision of the U.S. Army. When he returned home, he continued using his musical talents by playing in the Little German Band, singing in the Penns Valley Men’s choir and the choir at the Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church.
Family and friends will be received on Monday. May 13, 2024, from 10:00 am until noon at God’s Missionary Church, 145 N Alley in Rebersburg. The Celebration of Life service will follow at noon with Pastor Mike Guiswite officiating. Jim will be laid to rest in Woodward Cemetery in Woodward. Contributions in his memory may be given to UPMC Family Hospice, 20 Sheraton Drive, Altoona, PA 16601.
