Joan Patricia Courtney, 88, of State College, PA, formerly of Downingtown, PA, died on March 12, 2025. Joan was born on December 2, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Martha Feighery Courtney.
She was predeceased by brothers Howard and George Courtney, and sister Kay Courtney de Wit. She was also predeceased by her former husband, Paul F. Stachowski.
Three sisters survive her: Sister Maria Goretti Courtney, Diane Courtney Honzen, Linda Courtney, and many nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her four children: Jeffry Stachowski (Roxana Gearhart), Dennis Stachowski (Ludivina), Marc Stachowski (Marty Gallagher), and Cathleen Blumenthal.
She is survived by 12 grandchildren: Courtney Stachowski (Zach Williams), Alessandra Stachowski (Matt Kenney), Isabella Stabler (Mason), Max Stachowski, Flynn Stachowski (Kerry Champion), Leigh Stachowski (Divine), Misty Stachowski, Kevin Stuller, Amelia Smith (Kevin), Kristina Stuller (Josh Ball), Erin Blumenthal (Thomas McNamara), and Adam Blumenthal (Heather Muchowski). She is also survived by nine great grandchildren: Franklin Williams, Turner Stabler, Addison Stabler, Sylvia Cyrus, Karter Chambers, Kameron Chambers, Emersyn Webber, Valkyrie McNamara, and Sophia Blumenthal. Also dear to Joan were Isabelle and Annabelle Champion.
Her grandchildren cherish the time spent with her when she took them to Hershey Park and hosted Thanksgiving dinners with snowy white potatoes and pies for all. Other fond memories include Christmas at Grandma’s, sleepovers, watching movies, playing with her dog Beau, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, watching football, and chatting around the kitchen table.
Joan grew up in Pennsylvania, living primarily in the Philadelphia area and Central PA. Her favorite vacation spot was Cape May, NJ. Joan was a kind and gentle soul with a great sense of humor, a fabulous cook, and an avid reader.
Joan moved to State College in 2013 to be closer to family and resided at Arista Care at Hearthside. She made many friends at Hearthside, helped plan resident outings, and participated in numerous craft, game, and musical activities.
Joan’s funeral and a celebration of life gathering will be held at the convenience of the family. You may make memorial contributions to Pinnacle Hospice and Palliative Care, Altoona, PA, or an animal shelter of your choice.
