L. June (Colyer) DeSousa

L. June (Colyer) DeSousa, passed away on November 1, 2023, while residing at Eagle Valley Personal Care Home, Milesburg, PA.  She was born in Smullton, PA on March 5, 1931, to the late Franklin and Elizabeth (Bowersox) Colyer.  June grew up and resided in Millheim, PA until she moved to Eagle Valley.   She graduated from East Penns Valley High School in 1949.  On December 17, 1949, she married John DeSousa and they had two sons, Jack Lee and David Joe. She graduated from the Penn State Beauty Academy in 1965 and was owner and operator of June's Beauty Salon in Millheim for 42 years before her health forced her to retire.  She was a lifelong member of the former St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Millheim, where she served on many fundraising committees.  She was also a former member of the Ladies Fireman Auxiliary, Millheim and of the East Penns Valley Women's Club, where she served two terms as president.  June was a weekly volunteer at Salem Hill Haven Personal Care Home for 15 years where she gave haircuts and perms and helped out in the kitchen.

She is survived by her son Jack (Abbe) DeSousa of Coburn, PA, her daughters-in-law, Denise DeSousa of Port Matilda and Sue McCool of Centre Hall: four grandchildren, Gina (Marc) Lintal of Port Matilda, David DeSousa of State College, Curt DeSousa (Jewels) of Millheim, and Carlita (Spencer) Frederic of New Wales, PA.  Also surviving are two step-grandchildren: Jason Otto of La Porte, IN and Jeremy Otto of Coburn and two great-grandchildren: Sydney Lintal and Brighton Frederic, with another great-grandson on the way.  Her brother-in-law, Dee Lansberry survives in New York.  Her next-door neighbors, Wayne, Cathy and Jess Hibaugh were very special to her and were like family.

She was preceded in death by her spouse John, her brother John Colyer of Colorado and her sister, Judy Lansberry of New York.  She also lost her younger son Joe in a truck accident in 2003.

In addition to spending time with her family, she loved to cook and was always taking food to people in the community.  June also assisted the Neff Funeral Home in Millheim for many years, styling hair of the deceased.  She was very pleased to be chosen as Resident of the Month at Eagle Valley.

The family would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the staff at Eagle Valley and Aseracare Hospice for the excellent care she received and for all the kindness and laughter they brought to her.  She loved them all.  She never lost her sense of humor and always had everyone laughing.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, November 13, 2023, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home in Millheim.  The Celebration of June’s life will follow at 2:00 pm with Pastor Theresa Heiser officiating.  Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Millheim, PA at a later date.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.stevenrnefffuneralhome.com.
