Leo N. “Pap” Brindel, of Woodward, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. He was 94. Born June 24, 1927 in Woodward, Leo was a son of the late John and Ada “Arney” Brindel. On December 21, 1945, he married the love of his life, Katherine L. Kahle who preceded him in death on January 19, 2012.
Leo is survived by two daughters, Carol L. Sampsell (H. Paul) and Dixie L. Vogt (Scott) both of Centre Hall; one daughter in law, Carolyn Brindel of Georgia; one sister, Regina Fisher (Coburn); seven grandchildren, H. Troy Sampsell (Kimberly), Kristine Smith (Preston), Traci Loner (Nick), Karen Roberts (Jason), Angela Vogt-Auman (Rich), Lauren Vogt-Boob (Brian) and Michael Vogt (Kilee). Also surviving are nineteen grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren and his special canine friend, Tim. In addition to his wife, Leo was preceded in death by one son, Douglas H. Brindel and eleven siblings.
Leo was employed as an over the road truck driver for the steel mill, Milton Manufacturing. He was a member of the Union County Sportsman Club and he enjoyed hunting. He was a former member of the Woodward Cemetery Committee. After retirement, Leo and Katherine enjoyed camping at the Squirrel Hill Campground where they made many friends. They also enjoyed camping at Grange Fair. In his earlier years, Leo worked for Garbrick Amusements as a welder and, also for Harold Ard Sales and Service where he repaired tractors and drove school bus. In later years, Leo enjoyed having breakfast and coffee at Burkholder’s Market every day. Most of all, Leo loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren with whom he had a special relationship. He always told his family “he loved living where he could see Roundtop”.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 10-11 am at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Woodward, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am with Pastor Theresa Heiser officiating. Leo will be laid to rest in Woodward Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Leo may be given to Trinity UMC, c/o Peg Huey, PO Box 134, Woodward, PA 16882 or to the Hope Fund of Penns Valley, PO Box 427, Centre Hall, PA 16828.
