Neal Edwin Hazel, of Aaronsburg, passed from this life on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at Mount Nittany Medical Center. He was 87. Born October 5, 1935, in Aaronsburg, Neal was a son of the late Milford and Helen (Best) Hazel. On May 17, 1953, he married Jean L. (Rose) Hazel who preceded him in death on July 30, 2020.
Neal was employed as a Bridge Maintenance worker for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation with 22 years of service. He had also owned the Penns Valley Tavern (aka the Green Door) for 10 years. Neal was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Aaronsburg, the American Legion Post #444 in Millheim, Union County Sportsman Club, the Millheim Fireman’s Club and the Glenn Iron and New Berlin Fire Companies. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and providing Amish taxi service to the local area.
Neal is survived by two sons, Barry Hazel (Theresa) of West Decatur and William Hazel (Crystal) of Lemont: one sister, Jean Brown of Zion: four grandchildren, Matthew Hazel (Fran), Angela Beckwith (Carl), Alicia Burchell (Steele) and Chad Hazel-Kepler (Katie). Also surviving are seven great grandchildren, Derek, Sianna, Skylynn, Kali, Zayda, Asher and Lyric.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 19, 2023, from 10:00 am until 11:30 am at St. Peter’s UCC in Aaronsburg. The funeral service will follow at 11:30 with Pastor Teresa Hockenberry officiating. Neal will be laid to rest in the Reformed Cemetery in Aaronsburg. Contributions in memory of Neal may be given to St. Peter’s UCC, Po Box 87, Aaronsburg, PA 16820.
