Sherwood Heckman Obituary

Sherwood E. Heckman, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, following an illness.  A lifelong resident of Millheim, PA, Sherwood recently made his home at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home in Duncansville, PA.

Born January 17, 1943, in Bellefonte, Sherwood was a son of the late Earl R. and Mildred C. (Kern) Heckman.  He was a graduate of Penns Valley Area High School.  Sherwood was a proud member of the United States Army and Army Reserves.  He dedicated several years to serving his country with honor and commitment.  He held a deep appreciation for military service and enjoyed discussing history.

Sherwood was a longtime member of the American Legion Post # 444 in Millheim where he formed lasting friendships.  He was also a grateful recipient of a Happy Valley Quilts of Valor quilt, an honor recognizing his faithful military service.

Sherwood enjoyed attending open mic nights at local Millheim establishments, where he appreciated good music, lively conversation, and the company of friends.  His warm personality and genuine interest in others made him a welcome presence wherever he went.

Sherwood will be remembered for his kindness and willingness to offer encouragement or share his time with someone facing difficult circumstances.  He treasured the time spent with children and grandchildren.

Sherwood is survived by four children Sherene Hess (Lori Woods) of Indiana, PA, Jennifer Beres (Michael) of State College, Kristian Heckman (Karen Vinson) of Michigan and Timothy Heckman of Blairsville, all of whom loved him very much.  Also surviving is one brother, Irvin A. Heckman (Brenda) and five grandchildren, Adam Hess, Logan Hess, Grant Hess, Amy Heckman, and Gage Hess.  Sherwood was preceded in death by his former wife, E. Lorene Wance and his son in law, Mark Hess.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the many prayers, acts of kindness, and expressions of sympathy received during this time of loss.  Special thanks for their compassion, professionalism, and dedication are extended to the staff, caregivers, and healthcare professionals who cared for Sherwood at Wynwood House and the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, including Medi Home Hospice and Bristol Hospice.

A brief public graveside service held at noon on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spring Mills.  Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Keystone Post# 444 in Millheim.  A luncheon will be held at 1:00 pm at the Millheim Legion.
