Surrounded by her loving family, Shirley Ann Grove Rossman, 89, of Wynnwood House, Centre Hall, formerly of rural Spring Mills, died on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. She was born February 22, 1936, in Bellefonte, the daughter of Emma J. Grove and David A. Holter, Sr. She was a 1955 graduate of the former Gregg Township Vocational High School. Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Dale W. Rossman on June 8, 1955, in a ceremony held on the family farm. The couple celebrated 70 years of marriage in June.
Shirley was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was always in the kitchen cooking up something, most famously known for her potato soup. In her younger years, she would market baked goods, eggs, fryer and roasting chickens. She was an Avon representative for many years. She was a member of the Penns Valley Young Farmers, life member of the
Pennsylvania State Grange, the National Grange, a 75 year member of the Penns Valley Grange #158, life member of the Pennsylvania Young Farmers and the National Young Farmer Educational Association (NYFEA), a charter member of the former Nittany Antique Machinery Association Ladies Auxiliary where she served as secretary and peeled as much as a five gallon bucket of potatoes per day for their soups during show times, and a member of St. John’s Union Church, Farmers Mills. She taught private piano and organ lessons to over 100 students for over 50 years, a substitute musician for the church for 20 years, and a Penns Valley school cafeteria substitute for 3 years.
Her heart was huge and would help anyone. She would talk to all. Shirley enjoyed attending picnics, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, cooking, baking, and traveling to National Young Farmer activities, having gatherings at her home, pride in the farm being a Century Farm, and proud of her heritage. Her passion was music, enjoying musicals, and concerts and supporting her children’s activities.
She is survived by her husband, Dale, one daughter, Carol Ann Corman of Centre Hall, and two sons, Terry Allen (Brenda) and Gary Lynn (Cindy Puff) of Spring Mills. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Terra Deithorn (Eric), Brittnee Gensimore, Nicole Watkins (David), Dakota Rossman (Anna), and Connor Long: nine great grandchildren, Alexander and Bentley Deithorn,
Jaxon and Mason Gensimore, Memphis, Oaklee, and Warren Rossman, Braxton and Lilly Watkins. Shirley was preceded in death by a grandson, Brett Rossman.
Family and friends will be received from 9:00 am. until 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Farmers Mills.
