Sylvia W. Evans

Surrounded by her loving family, Sylvia W. Evans, formerly of Millheim, was called home by her heavenly Father on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Wynwood House in Centre Hall.  She was 91.  Born June 11, 1932, in Aaronsburg, Sylvia was a daughter of the late Lawrence E. and Georgia D. “Stricker” Wance.  She was a 1951 graduate of the former East Penns Valley High School.  On September 24, 1953, she married Harry Richard Evans, and they parted ways as friends on February 10, 1970.

Sylvia held various positions throughout her life, aspiring to do better to raising her five children as a single Mother.  Early in her career, she was employed at the Millheim Hosiery Mill and Gettig Engineering Technologies, before retiring from the Corning Asahi after twenty-two years of service.  Sylvia attended Faith Alive Fellowship, was a member of Penns Valley Pomona Grange #153 and a former member of the Millheim Fireman’s Ladies Auxiliary.  After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with family and friends, especially with the Young at Heart Senior Group.  She was an avid reader, often exchanging books with friends.  Sylvia was incredibly proud of her large family and their accomplishments and enjoyed the many family gatherings.  She played an important part in her grandchildren’s lives by providing care and following them through all the activities and milestones in life.  While this very special lady will be dearly missed, her family is comforted to know that she has been reunited with her sons and the family saints who went before her and is now in the presence of the Lord.

Sylvia is survived by one daughter, Tammy Myers (John) of Millheim; two sons, Harry E. Evans (Brenda Smith) of Bellefonte and Larry D. Evans (Helen) of Tyrone; a daughter in law, Desiree Evans of Spring Mills and two sisters, Barbara Smith (Robert) of Lewistown and Donna Wilcox (John) of Littleton, CO.  Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, one great grandchild on the way, along with numerous nieces and nephews.  Sylvia was preceded in death by sons Thomas E. and Timothy E. Evans and infant twin sons, Rodney A. and Richard S. Evans.

Family and friends will be received on Saturday, November 11, 2023, from 10-11 am at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home in Millheim, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am with Pastor Chris Korn officiating.  Sylvia will be laid to rest in the Reformed Cemetery in Aaronsburg.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be given to the charity of donor’s choice.
