Jean A. (Shultz) Huey, formerly of Madisonburg, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 19th at Centre Crest Nursing Home in Bellefonte. She was 93. Born May 9, 1925 in Tylersville, Jean was a daughter of the late Ira and Blanche (Shaffer) Shaffer. When she was 3 weeks old her mother died, and Jean was adopted by the late William and Irma Shultz. On September 21, 1944, she married James C. Huey who preceded her in death on July 22, 2007.
Jean worked as a telephone operator during World War II at the former Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven, then she went to Penn State University where she worked in the Housekeeping Department. Jean and her husband bought and managed Huey’s Grocery in Madisonburg, and Jean also worked as a clerk in the US Post Office in Madisonburg where her husband was postmaster. Later she rode a van as a caretaker for special needs children. In her spare time, Jean enjoyed quilting, crocheting and keeping the home for her husband and children. She was a very particular housekeeper. Jean was a member of the Christ United Church of Christ in Madisonburg where she was active on the Service Committee. She and Jim took great pride in their community, working hand in hand with the Civic Club Organization where she was active in all social events.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Duck of TX, Lois Miller (Glen) of Madisonburg and Lynnette Breon (Kurt) of Centre Hall; seven grandsons, Lynn Duck (Kim) of CA, Christopher Bair (Annette) of GA, Mark Breon, (Ron) of OR, Keith Duck (Victoria) of TX, Kevin Breon of Pittsburgh, Andrew Breon (Alyssa) of Bellefonte and Allen Miller (Megan Homan) of Centre Hall. Also surviving are four great grandchildren, Griffin, Nicholas, Rhiana and Remy. Jean is the last surviving sibling of the 13 Shaffer children having been preceded by sisters, Rosie Laird, Miriam Smith, Mary Annabelle Faust, Thelma Limbert, Sara Crook, Ida, and infant sister Helena; brothers, Lee, Harold, Jessie, Clair and Gordon Shaffer, and one son in law, Tom Duck.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, June 24th from 1-2 pm at the Christ UCC in Madisonburg, followed by the funeral at 2pm with Pastor Julie Holm officiating. Jean will be laid to rest in the Lutheran Cemetery in Madisonburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jean’s memory may be given to Centre Crest Auxiliary, 502 E Howard Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823 or to UCC & Lutheran Cemetery Inc., Po Box 124, Madisonburg, PA 16852.
