Byrd McMillian Futhey passed away peacefully on May 11, 2022, at her home in Millheim PA, with her children by her side. Byrd was married to George R. Futhey, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Anne Jones, of Clinton SC, and her four children: Emily P. Stover (Doug) Richmond VA; Hannah L. Futhey, Bellefonte PA; Martha B. Futhey, Woodward PA and Brian F. Futhey, Millheim PA.
Byrd was born on March 23, 1925 in Clinton South Carolina, the daughter of Emily P. McMillian and Lonnie S. McMillian. She grew up in Clinton SC, attending Presbyterian College before working in Washington DC, and Korea for the American Red Cross. In 1952, she married George R. Futhey, later moving to Woodward PA where they operated a dairy farm.
Byrd was an accomplished puppeteer and marionette maker, often creating and performing shows locally. Known for sheltering up in her “sewing room”, she often made clothing for her children before turning her attention to designing and making numerous quilts, dolls and crafts. Also a superb baker, we have fond memories of her fresh bread, rolls and pies. Byrd co-founded the Aaronsburg Library, now the East Penns Valley Library, and served as president of the board for many years. To support the Children’s Reading Program, Byrd began the Children’s Festival, setting up games and parades in the Aaronsburg Wert Memorial Park. This festival eventually became Dutch Fall Days, an ongoing community event. She donated many quilts for raffles in support of the Aaronsburg Library fundraisers.
Byrd is survived by six grandchildren: Jude S. Futhey, Millheim PA; Emily J. Morton (Richard), Reston VA; Kara P. Wiseman (Tony) Richmond, VA; Anna B. Kobb (Alex Flint) Vancouver Island, CN; Emma B. Futhey, Allston MA; Samantha L. Futhey Moscow ID, and two Great-grandchildren, Russell Wiseman and Anna R. Morton.
