Frederick "Fred" C. Mensch

Frederick C. Mensch, 89, formerly of Millheim, passed from this life on October 6, 2016 at Haven Skilled Nursing & Rehab in Lock Haven.  Born December 22, 1929 in Sunbury, Fred was a son of the late Frederick and Elizabeth “Stoner” Mensch.  He was a graduate of East Penns Valley High School.  On December 21, 1949, Fred married Betty M. Bowersox, who survives at their home in Lock Haven.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.  Fred was preceded in death by one brother, Jonathan Mensch.

Fred proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the WW II and the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of SGT and earning the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.  He was a dairy farmer early in life and later retired from Penn State University with 30 years of service as a lab technician.  Fred was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and the High Top Hunting Club.  He was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the Millheim Bicentennial.  Fred was a former member of the Millheim Borough Council and was known as a local historian, having put together several books on local history.  He also enjoyed woodworking in his spare time.

In accordance with Fred’s wishes, there will be no public viewing.  Family and friends are invited to a public graveside service at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Dawn Marie Meier officiating.  Contributions in memory of Fred may be given to the Salem U.C.C, c/o Helen Sweeley, 125B Brush Mt. Road, Spring Mills, PA 16875 or to Fairview Cemetery Association, c/o Ethel Rote, Po Box 77, Millheim, PA 16854.  Steven R. Neff Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
