"Ed, it was a Desoto." That is how John privately told me about an error in the original Fools And Children -- after a presentation during which he might have called me out. As you will remember, Vonnie, I took every opportunity to "jam" him during book talks. I hope he enjoyed that. I admire John. He was great to us younger kids, he built a life that his obit can only partially convey. Skills in so many areas. And, to my mind, a self-made man, and a fine one. I'm sure you were challenged in his last few years, and several of us have talked about that. So, we remember the both of you. And know, truly, that I feel badly about his passing. Damn it.

Vonnie and Family
Rose and I were so shocked and saddened to read in the CDY of John's passing upon our return from Philadelphia this Tuesday. John was a joy to play with in the LGB and I was always happy to see him there ( for 40+ years) as he always was such a jokester and helped make each gig so enjoyable. Please accept out heartfelt condolences to you and yours in these hours of sorrow.

Vonnie,

Sorry to hear of John's death. After reading his obituary, I wish I had time to discuss his military service (USAF veteran as I am) and many other of his interests. I am sure you will miss his presence but hopefully we can try to keep you somewhat "happy' with Facebook posts. Know that I am thinking about our initial meeting in the tent at the fair and hopefully you will continue to attend and we will see you again.

Sincerely, Gary Thomas
